Deep Sea

For anyone who loves the world underneath the oceans, and loves to discover everything that realm has to offer, this is the film to see. While it is not quite as well done as some others, it will provide an entertaining and enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours on a dreary Saturday afternoon.

With expert narration provided by Academy Award nominees Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, this film introduces viewers to the strange and amazing world under the sea and the amazing array of creatures who inhibit it. We see gigantic jellyfish who are almost entirely translucent, to huge octopuses who could crush a human’s head between just a couple of its tentacles. We also learn a bit about the environment that produces creatures like this, and how their reactions to that environment are precisely what has made them adapt over the years so that they could thrive rather than die off.

Of course, the photography is stunning, but I have to say that I’ve seen better presented films on this topic. The work of the Ocean Futures Society immediately comes to mind, as well as some of the Nova presentations that deal with subjects encompassing the world under our seas.

This movie is certainly not bad, and it can prove educational and entertaining to both adults and children seeking to learn a bit more about the world beneath our oceans. But, frankly there are far better presented films for this purpose and I’d probably recommend them before spending money on this one.
