Do-It-Yourself Massage Therapy: Face

Massaging your own face can be as simple as holding your cheeks in the palms of your warm hands for several minutes while the heat and tactile stimulation encourages blood flow. Depending on the techniques you use, your face massage can either be relaxing or invigorating.

For an invigorating face massage, start by placing the heels of your hands together and cupping your neck with both hands. Stroke upward over your cheeks, up the bridge of your nose, across your forehead and back down your temples and jaw back down to your neck. Repeat several times.

Gently pinch along your jaw line and under your chin. Repeat the pinching along your eyebrows, starting at the nose and working out toward your temples. Lightly tap around your eyes, following the cheekbones, starting at the temple and working your way toward your nose.

A relaxing face massage uses broader strokes. Start at the corners of your mouth and stroke with the backs of your fingers toward your ears. Using your middle fingers, draw light circles around your eye sockets starting from eyebrows to temples, down and back toward the nose.

With the tips of your fingers, stroke along the bridge of the nose toward the hairline. Using your full hands, stroke from your eyebrows to your hairline, alternating hands over several strokes. To end this relaxing massage, cover your face with your hands and stroke outward toward your ears.

People with oily skin may find there is no need to use massage oils, while those with dry facial skin may find a light massage oil necessary. If using massage oil, finish by washing your face to remove the excess oil and prevent blemishes.
