Drop-stitch knitting

Aside from double knitting, faggoting, binding off, and bias knitting, another knitting technique is called the drop-stitch knitting. It is a type of knitting technique for making open and vertical stripes in a garment. The first step is to join a solid fabric, and then drop at least one or more stitches such as drawing a loop out from the loop below it, producing a run in the fabric. Then, the run will proceed to the edge of the clothing, or until it sees an increase, at which it stops.

The see-through effect of lace can be easily achieved through drop-stitch runs. The designer can create interesting arrangements and patterns of open stripes for whatever length through drop-stitch technique. Drop-stitch stripes are commonly vertical, since they follow the grain of the knitting. However, the grain of the knitting can be done off-vertical. On the other hand, the cross-strands can also be changed in many different ways and patterns. For instance, by means of a crochet hook, a designer can change them into bigger knitted bights such as drawing four strands through the four below them, and so on in no particular order or manner. Another example is that the rungs can also be bound up in various patterns applying darning needle and a contrasting yarn and a darning needle.

Dropped stitches are a fun addition to a lot of projects like belts, headbands, scarves, and tank tops. Dropped stitches can also be used as an element in design in making a plain project more interesting. Knitting is all about using the imagination in creating unique and interesting knitted materials.
