Ferret rescue organizations are non-profit groups that take in lost, abandoned, unwanted and ill ferrets. Rescued ferrets are typically tested for common diseases like heartworm and parvo virus; are given boosters of essential vaccines such as rabies and canine distemper; and are spayed or neutered before being made available for fostering or adoption. Many ferret rescue groups also work to rehabilitate injured animals so they can be found new homes once their recovery is complete. Most rescues rely on public donations and fundraising events to help defray the cost of medical treatments, vaccines and medications, supplies, and food for ferrets in the shelter.
