Homosexuality and Adolescence

Homosexuality is the name given when the sexual orientation of the individual indicates interest in same sex relationships. During the adolescent years, teenagers are exploring their own sexuality. By the time they are an adult, they most likely will have a firm knowledge of their sexual orientation. The time between the teen years and adulthood can often be full of questions as the teenager explores their own self awareness.
Many teens fear that they are homosexual because they are curious about sexual relations with members of the same sex. This is, however, quite normal and does not mean that the teenager will be homosexual in their sexual orientation. There are a number of possibilities for this curiosity.
Same sex sexual contact or interest can be a part of the adolescent’s experimentation, but does not necessarily mean that this is going to be the adolescent’s lifelong pattern. Sometimes the contact or interest is based on the curiosity that is aroused due to the normal hormonal fluctuations and curiosity that comes with this age period.

Teenagers who fear that they are becoming homosexual should realize that sexual curiosity is a normal part of life as a teenager. The fact is that many teenagers who are heterosexual as adults have early homosexual experiences, while many teenagers who are homosexual often do not have any same sex experiences until they become adults. The bottom line is that adolescence comes with a variety of new ideas and curiosity and the teenager should feel comfortable with their own curiosity.
