I Hate Valentine’s Day

If you ever watched the blockbuster, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” then you are familiar with the work of the two stars of this flick, Nia Vardalos and John Corbett. You are also likely left feeling very disappointed in the result of their reuniting in this film.

In this movie Genevieve (played by Vardalos) is the owner of a Brooklyn florist’s shop called “Roses for Romance. One would think that with such an occupation, she would be perfectly suited for romance, but that is not the case. Past heartaches and failed romances have made her wary of further romantic entanglements – until she meets up with a new restaurateur in town, Greg (played by Corbett). The two make an unlikely couple, and that’s where the comedy should have been in plentiful supply.

Genevieve with her world wary (never go on more than five dates with the same man) attitude, and Greg in his clueless about the dos and don’ts of romance outlook should have provided the audience with a lot of entertainment in this movie, but that just didn’t happen.

When these two unlikely characters meet up, they try to follow the mandate that Genevieve lays down for their relationship – no more than five dates, but it just doesn’t work. Romance somehow comes into the picture and the two are doomed.

This could have been a sweet romantic comedy, but sadly – likely because of poor direction on the part of Vardalos (who made her directorial debut with this movie) it fell flat on its face. Tragic.
