Last Chance Harvey

This is the story of a chance meeting between two unlikely souls, Harvey Shine who has the unusual job of a jingle writer, and Kate Walker, a woman who surveys passengers at Heathrow International Airport for a living and then comes home at night to care for her aging mother.

Harvey is devastated because he finds out that the company he is writing jingles for is thinking about letting him go. He looks defeated in everyway. Kate also seems at wits end in a life that contains little enjoyment, just the day-to-day drudgery of a woman trying to make ends meet and take care of her mother in the process.

These two lost souls meet and together they seem to find the salve for each of their souls. This is a love story; a tale of redemption as two people find in each other what they need to gain a fresh perspective on what would at face value seem very sad lives.

I liked this story because it’s a simple one. It’s a love story, but has some highly dramatic scenes such as when Kate tells Harvey that she had an abortion many years ago, and gave up the possibilities of how different, and how much more rewarding her life could have been with a child of her own. It also has its funny moments and these two people find their way with each other and draw the audience in as a part of that process.

Simple, yet touching is how I would describe this film.
