Mamma Mia

Any movie that has a brilliant star cast like Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan is bound to get loads of hype and publicity. And Mamma Mia, the musical has done true justice to these two excellent performers with an interesting script packed with the unforgettable and eternal music of Abba.

Being an ardent Abba fan myself, I could not wait to watch this movie and to tell you the truth; I was in for a real fun ride. Unlike most musicals that tend to take a toll on your patience with an endless line of songs, Mamma Mia was refreshing and yes, the songs of Abba brought in oodles of charm.

The story centres on the growing bond between a mother and daughter and the relationship between two bosom friends. Needless to say the performance of Meryl Streep has been nothing short of brilliant. She seems to fit into the role so easily that I started to believe she was born to sing! Streep also looks like she truly had a great time working for this movie.

Streep beautifully portrays the single mom who is eager to get her daughter married. However confusion follows, as she is uncertain of the identity of the father of her daughter.

What follows is a hilarious attempt to guess the true identity of the father as the daughter calls in all the potential men, one of who ‘could’ be her father. Here is where Pierce Brosnan delivers a fine performance. The star gives us one of his best comic roles and no traces of the suave Bond here. My only disappointment was Brosnan’s voice. Yes, you will agree with me once you have heard him sing in the movie!
