Schizophrenia: Psychological Disorder

A psychological disorder occurs in an individual in the form of distress or a disability which is not considered a normal part of development. It is common in society and causes problems of discrimination and stigma from the public.

Schizophrenia is one of the common mental disorders where individuals find it difficult to recognise the difference between real and unreal experiences. These individuals are unable to have normal emotional responses, logical thinking, and normal patterns of behaviour. Typically, the disorder becomes evident between adolescence and early adulthood. Schizophrenic symptoms may include delusions and hallucinations, disorganised behaviour and speech, a reduced range of emotional expression, memory problems, and disorganised thought processes. Experts have cited several factors that affect the development of Schizophrenia, such as heredity, environment, and psychological and social factors. People with schizophrenia are prone to physical illness due to side effects from medication and have a high risk of developing substance abuse.

The use of antipsychotic medications is effective in treating this disorder, but it also brings side effects to the patient. However, researchers have found solutions to address these side effects so they won’t prevent people from seeking treatment for Schizophrenia. Work rehabilitation, supported housing, and other community support programmes are needed for the fast recovery of the Schizophrenic patient.

Studies have proven that aside from taking the appropriate medication, the best way to prevent and treat the development of this mental disorder lies in the hands of the family and friends of the individual. There is no greater medicine than the loving care and understanding of loved ones.
