‘Secretary’



The movie ‘Secretary’ debuted in 2002. It features an array of stars which collectively produced several impressive performances. Two of the most notable performances are delivered by the movie’s lead characters. James Spader plays the role of Mr. Grey, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the role of Lee Holloway. The movie is based on Mary Gaitskill’s short of the same name.

The plot revolves around Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character Lee Holloway. She plays the role of a mental patient recently released from a psychological institution. She begins dating someone whom she attended high school with, and finds a job working as a secretary. Her boss is Mr. Grey, played by James Spader.

As the story develops, Holloway begins to fall for Mr. Grey and becomes slightly obsessive over him. The two have a very interesting relationship that plays well throughout the film. It is easy to become attached to the film as the characters begin to develop and you gradually realize that what you are watching is actually a love story. Many will also be surprised that there is a bit of humour wrapped up in the story as well.

‘Secretary’ was nominated for close to twenty different awards from a variety of different sources. It managed to claim 14 of those awards including the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for Drama. This film is considered to provide the break out role for Maggie Gyllenhaal as well. Originally Gwyneth Paltrow was slated to play the role of Lee Holloway.
