Strict Parents

It is a parent’s job to set rules within the household. Your parents have the responsibility for keeping you safe. Parents will also set rules to ensure that you are raised according to their values and beliefs. You may feel like your parents are over strict, especially if you are regularly unable to do things that your friends are allowed to do.

Teenagers often only realise that they have strict parents when they are not allowed to do something that they really want to do. How you deal with this can make all the difference. If you choose to shout and scream about how unfair they are being, the chances are your parents will see this as evidence that you don’t have the maturity to make decisions for yourself. However, if you sit down and speak to your parents calmly and rationally, there is more chance of you all coming to a compromise. It is probably best to ask your parents to discuss all rules with you. This way, you can explain to them the rules that you feel are fair and that you are happy to live within but you also get the opportunity to explain why you think other rules are unfair.

If your parents agree to give you some more freedoms, you must then do your part by showing them that you can be trusted. You are then more likely to be able to negotiate further with your parents in the future.
