Travelling and Influenza

With the recent Swine Flu pandemic, protecting yourself against influenza while on holiday has become extremely important for all types of holidaymaker. However, young travellers are especially at risk of catching different strains of influenza, as not only is it a highly contagious virus, but it is easily spread in shared accommodation, such as hostels, which normally attract younger visitors.

Keeping a good level of hygiene is probably the best way to prepare yourself for avoiding the virus, and washing your hands after you use the bathroom and before eating will go a long way in keeping you in full health.
You should also pay attention to new rules and regulations which have been set up in a wide range of countries across the world. It is now commonplace for a country’s borders to check visitors to see if they could potentially carry the Swine Flu virus. Some have installed devices which automatically record your body temperature as you pass through, while other countries are testing the temperature of travellers with a thermometer. But no matter where you travel to, it is more than likely that you will have to fill out forms regarding the current state of your health and what parts of the country you plan to visit.

Basic advice, such as covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze or avoiding anyone who may have symptoms of a virus, will also be important to follow. Additionally, ensuring any meat you eat is cooked thoroughly will also help you avoid illness.
