Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

Here’s an unusual movie to be found on a horror list! After all, Abbott and Costello are best known for comedy. Well, this movie has comedy, of course, but it also manages to throw in some chills. This isn’t such a stretch. In the past, movies like ‘The Invisible Man’ would add little comedic touches to lighten the mood.

In ‘Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,’ Bud and Lou are delivery men, and they deliver Dracula’s coffin (with Bela Lugosi in it), and the Frankenstein Monster (played by Glenn Strange) to a museum. As a little side note, the producers wanted to get Boris Karloff for the role, but he was unavailable. Then there’s Lon Chaney, Jr. as Larry Talbot (his character from the movie ‘The Wolf Man’). Turns out, Larry is intent on stopping Dracula from finding a new brain for the monster so he’ll be easier to control. And whose brain is simple, stupid, and easy to control, Who else, but Lou!

Of course, no one believes Lou, until it’s almost too late. Naturally, the final scene takes place in a creepy old castle at night with the full moon rising. So, Larry goes from being a helper to becoming a werewolf, and Bud and Lou are pretty much on their own to fight off all three. This is where the comedy and horror truly blend together, and you don’t know whether to laugh or cringe at any given moment.

Oh, and at the end, Vincent Price makes a cameo “appearance” as the ‘Invisible Man.’
