Antihistamine



There are natural chemicals secreted out by the body and they are known as Histamine, and the drugs to stop its effect in blood, are known as Antihistamine Drugs. The chemical on its release, lets the mucous membranes going towards the Nose and throat to increase in size. Some of the common symptoms are a little swelling caused with itching and also reddening of the skin. One can also see some watery eyes, sneezing regularly and also itching in body. For some people it may also be a little uneasiness in breath. The release of this is caused mainly due to allergies and overreaction by the immune system. The drugs prevent the body from letting this secretion of the chemical, preventing the body from going in the allergic reaction. The drugs come in different formats, like Tablets, Creams and also as injections for a quicker heal. With the recent improvement, the drugs in their old format which used to cause lot of drowsiness, don’t do that anymore and relieves it more easily.

How do these drugs work

The Histamine receptor cells are there all around in the body and on the release of this chemical in the blood, the chemical gets attached to the cell which in turn causes the blood flow to increase and swell. The drugs actually get to the receptor cells and stop the allergy and also the symptoms attached to it. Also they move with the blood and go to the brain, inducing a sleepy stage, also ensuring that one does not feel the extremes of sneezing or vomits.

What are these drugs used for

The drugs come in tablets, cream and injection formats. The tablets do help in relieving from allergies around nose and itching sensations caused. The tablets are not the best to relieve from a congested nose but an ideal combination with a decongestant would better its composition. Cream and ointments are quite effective and also reduce the chances of rashes and itches on the skins mainly caused by insect bits and stings. The injections are useful in emergency situations and also some serious allergic reaction cases.

Who can use these

The patients are always advised to avoid these drugs while you need to be active like, driving, operating machines or something similar which could result to be fatal, since the drugs induces sleep. The drugs are often safe for kids, but a prescription from the pharmacist would be great. During pregnancy, women should avoid any such medications and during a real hour of need, consulting the doctor is advisable.

Side Effects

The major side effect is the drowsiness. In the previous medicines, the amount of drowsiness was major but has improved with time. Also a little dry mouth, blurring of vision and a slight headache is also expected in the patients taking these drugs. The creams work well, except at times causing hypersensitivity of the skin and also a long time usage is not recommended. Also driving is not recommended while taking the drugs since drowsiness would not be the best state while you are on the road.
