Australian Kelpie – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Australian Kelpie is a sheepdog originating in Australia. Another name for this breed is the Barb. There are two types of Australian Kelpies; one is the show Kelpie and the other is the working Kelpie.

The working Australian Kelpie needs few or no commands in order to do its job. This is a self governed dog that requires limited guidance. They are not only used for cattle, in fact they have efficient techniques for herding many farm animals. They have proficient strategies for watching over and taking care of livestock. However, in some cases, the Kelpies may nip the heels of the animals to herd them. If this is undesirable, training may need to be utilized to break them from using this technique.

The solid coloured Kelpies are those that are selected for show. The working Kelpies can have any of the normal Australian Kelpie colours which are vast. There are only three types of hair that can be on the Kelpie fur coat: short, rough and smooth.
