Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce Giselle Knowles is a versatile artist; a singer-songwriter, record producer, model, actress, video director, dancer and choreographer – an impressive list of skills for this 28-year-old Texan beauty.

Beyonce first rose to fame as a member of the girl R&B band Destiny’s Child, a band that had morphed from Girl’s Tyme, a band that had been created when Beyonce was eight years old. They were signed to Columbia Records in 1997 and their debut single for the label was ‘Killing Time’ for the movie ‘Men in Black’. The group, with a changing line-up and bitter lawsuits, went on to sell millions of records worldwide, their most successful album ‘Survivor’ clocking up 10 million sales.

In 2001, the group decided on a temporary break to pursue solo projects and Beyonce signed a solo deal with Columbia Records. The same year she was offered the title role in made-for-TV film ‘Carmen: A Hip Hopera’ – a contemporary film set in Philadelphia and based on the Bizet opera ‘Carmen’.

The following year she starred in ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’ and her first solo single ‘Work it Out’ appeared on the soundtrack. The film was a box office smash.

In 2004, Beyonce and her mother launched House of Dereon, a woman’s fashion line. She was the third generation to be involved in women’s fashion; her grandmother had been a seamstress and her mother a costume designer.

Beyonce is one of the world’s highest paid celebrities and in 2009 was ranked 4th in Forbes’ Most Influential Celebrities.
