Birds and Other Pets



If you already have other pets, can you bring home a pet bird to add to the menagerie, Or, if you already have a pet bird, can you add another furry friend, Never bring a pet home on impulse. They are a big responsibility. If your birds have their wings clipped, then they are especially vulnerable. Keep in mind that many pet birds raised by hand may never have seen a dog or a cat before.

Cats

If you have small, friendly birds like canaries or cockatiels, then do not get a cat. If you are pet sitting a cat for a little while, have the cat and the bird stay in separate rooms and never leave them alone together unsupervised. Not all cats will hunt birds, but most will.

Very large birds like scarlet macaws can be a menace to cats, as these birds are large enough to do a cat a real injury.

Dogs

This really depends on the temperament of the dog and how soon the dog is trained to leave birds alone or as members of the pack. If your dog has ever participated in hunting or gun dog field trials, then getting a bird is not a good idea.

Rodents

Birds and rodents tend to ignore each other, with the exception of very large birds like parrots or macaws. They are very strong and have been known to kill small rodents out of jealousy.

Snakes

If you have a large snake, then it’s not recommended to get a pet bird.
