Black Norwegian Elkhound – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Black Norwegian Elkhound is a Spitz breed of dog. As the name indicates, it originated in Norway. It is generally rare outside its native land. It is smaller than the Grey Norwegian Elkhound, yet it was created for the very same purpose. One of the best reasons for the change in colouring is that the Black Norwegian Elkhound is easier to spot in the snow. The breeders wanted to make this dog stick out in the blinding white conditions to make it a little easier to find when hunting.

The Black Norwegian Elkhound has a compact, square build, firm body and erect ears. The coat is thick and, of course, black in colour, as the name indicates. The coat is an effective barrier meant to keep out the extreme cold and storm conditions of its home land. It is a lush double coat. The tail is tightly curled and is carried directly over the back.

This breed is very courageous, especially for it size. They are alert, focused, strong and resilient. The Black Norwegian Elkhound is an energetic dog that loves to be active. Its athletic heritage is a major part of its over all makeup.
