Bluetick Coonhound – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Bluetick Coonhound originated in the United States of America. This breed was created by mixing the following dog breeds: English Foxhound, Virginia Foxhound, American Foxhound, Cur and the Bleu de Gascogne.

The Bluetick Coonhound has a very hound-like physique. It presents many of the distinct characteristics of the hound dog. The body is well muscled and never chunky. The ears are long and droopy. The typical hound expression is displayed on the Bluetick Coonhound, which is pleading and not timid.

Bluetick Coonhounds are known and named for their blue colouring in their fur coats. The colouring is made by the mottling patterns characteristic of this breed. There are also black spots commonly throughout the body, but there should always be more blue than black.

This is an active breed. It lives by its sense of smell and so it needs to be able to get outdoors frequently and enjoy the inherent need to follow trails. The Coonhound is an excellent hunter and tracker. Given his temperament and strong tracking instincts, it is important for the breeds well being that he be utilized as such.

The Bluetick Coonhound is a very gentle breed. They are not at all aggressive. This makes it a safe choice for families with children. This dog should not be left alone in homes. This breed can sleep indoors but primarily it should be an outside animal with plenty of room to roam yet also somewhat confined so it does not wander to far from home. Keeping it locked up without ample room can prove to be a disastrous mistake.
