Bohemian Shepherd – Dog Breed Information and Pictures



The Bohemian Shepherd originated in the Czechoslovakian Republic. The other common names of this breed are Chodsky Pes, Chodenhund, Czech Sheepdog, and the Bohemian Herder. They are well known for their alertness and keen senses. The Bohemians have been used as watchdogs and guard dogs because they notice problems and alert humans to them quickly.

The Bohemian Shepherd is a medium sized dog. It is well built and sturdy, with a typical weight for this breed being around 55 pounds or less (25 kg). Their ears are pointed and erect, are set high and are relatively small. The double-layered coat has a thick outer layer and a dense undercoat to protect it from harsh weather. The colour of the coat is a combination of black and tan.

The Bohemian Shepherd has had a wide range of tasks in its long history. They have been used frequently as rescue and/or guide dogs, for sledding, herding and other diverse work. Their skills are vast and their abilities are endless. With proper training, this intelligent canine can do just about anything. They do not usually require training for easy concept duties, they learn fast.

The active breed is not aggressive. In fact, they are a loving and affectionate animal that desires to please. They are gentle around children, elderly and disabled individuals and work well with them. This dog is affectionate and loyal. They are calm around strangers yet cautious and watchful.
