Bouvier des Ardennes – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Bouvier des Ardennes is a hard working dog originating in the Belgian Ardennes. Also known as the Ardennes Cattle Dog, they are used mainly on ranches and farms for herding and driving livestock. This, however, is not the extent of their talents; they are also known for their skills as a hunter.

The Bouvier des Ardennes is a medium sized canine. They are rugged and hardy in structure. Their strength is evident in the appearance. This dog is heavy boned, compact and muscular. This particular cattle dog typically weighs less than sixty-five pounds (29 kg).

The Bouvier des Ardennes dogs are normally tailless; those that are not often have their tails bobbed. Of course, some tails are present but this feature is unique and adds to the genuine appearance of the breed. The Ardennes is a high-spirited dog with an agile and swift flowing gait.

The double coat is coarse and dense with a tousled look. Common colours of the coat are a blend of black, brown, red, grey and fawn shades. They can have just about any colour or tint except for pure white.

They are an adaptable breed that is highly intelligent and can handle just about any situation calmly and effectively. Although the Bouvier des Ardennes is playful, loving and affectionate, they can also be determined and powerful when defending their owner, family or territory. They need a lot of exercise so these dogs do not generally make good house pets. They require ample room to run and release their energy.
