Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

There are simply hundreds of ways to describe Audrey Hepburn’s iconic party-girl character Holly Golightly in this enchanting romantic comedy: charming, waif-like, offbeat, dizzy, vibrant, chic, sexy, and delicate. They are all accurate, but Holly is also a deeply romantic and insecure soul wrapped in the shallow, stylish skin of a faux free spirit, one who yearns for love, romance and security. Audrey Hepburn – the beautiful lady in the Givenchy dress, the pearls and the large sunglasses – has become the instant memory of Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

Holly Golightly won’t acknowledge her Texas roots, not since she moved to New York and found ways to allow grateful men to fund her glamorous existence. Hepburn may well be the main reason this film has spellbound audiences for almost 50 years, but she’s certainly not the only reason it is enjoyed. The soundtrack, featuring the award winning song “Moon River”, adds to the film’s dreamy atmosphere. Mostly, however, the movie is Hepburn’s showcase, and she like the film is as sparkling as a glass of Holly’s beloved champagne, and just as intoxicating. This film is an absolutely must-see for any fan of romantic comedies.
