Bullmastiff – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Bullmastiff started out as a mixed breed of two dogs, the English Mastiff and the Old English Bulldog. They were originally bred in the mid to late 1800’s to help gamekeepers stop poaching in England. This powerful breed was effective in immobilizing poachers by mauling them or causing severe harm or even death.

The Bullmastiff is a powerful breed that is highly courageous and will see anything as a challenge and nothing as an intimidation. They are very alert and focused. This fearless canine is also submissive to its owner and their commands. They need a lot of exercise, as they are an athletic breed.

The fur coat of the Bullmastiff is dense and short. It is generally flat against the body and thick enough to protect against the weather and natural elements. Usually the only shades of the coat are brindle, red or fawn in colour. They have a dark muzzle, a darker tint to the ears and a tail that is set high.

This independent and confident dog will protect against any threat that presents itself. The Bullmastiff is a loyal companion that takes the protection of its family very seriously. They are territorial and their instincts are to deter strangers regardless of intention. Socialization at an early age is extremely important or the Bullmastiff’s instincts could become a negative attribute.

The Bullmastiff can prove to be trusted around other animals except for other male Bullmastiffs. This might present a problem. Children are typically safe around these dogs. However, it should always be remembered that in spite of its best intentions the sheer size and strength of this breed could result in harm to young children. Training might be needed if they are too rough.
