Career Choices – RAF



If a career in the armed forces appeals to you, you may want to consider the RAF (Royal Air Force) as they have a wide range of roles, and you will have the chance to learn to pilot various forms of aircraft. In a war zone, the RAF are the airborne specialists, who work alongside all the other armed forces and provide vital air support and reconnaissance.

The minimum formal education requirements vary for each job, so you would need to check out their website or speak to them at a career day for more information. However, there are a wide variety of roles available for those who find getting formal qualifications difficult.

If you meet the levels of education for the role you are after, there are also several other issues that you have deal with. These include a minimum level of fitness, including health standards, such as vision, and not having any excluded medical conditions. Age requirements also vary for each different role. However, again these are job specific, so you would need to check. You can lodge an application with the RAF from the age of 15 years and 9 months old.

Remember that with a career in the RAF you will be taken away from home for long periods of time. It is important that you are able to cope with this mentally, as you will not see friends, family or loved ones for many months at a time.
