Caring for Bunnies

Caring for baby bunnies is a difficult job that requires vast amounts of patience and love. A baby rabbit is called a kitten. You should only attempt to care for kittens if you know for certain that they have been orphaned somehow. If their mother is still alive, it is best to allow nature to run its course. However, things do happen to leave a litter without its mother. In this case you may be required to step in and take over the parental role.

If you suddenly find yourself with a litter of baby rabbits to care for, you will want to start by speaking with your local vet. They may be able to equip you with supplies like empty syringes or tiny bottle nipples that are small enough for the kittens to suck. Goat’s milk is often recommended as it tends to be very gentle. Clarify everything with a professional before you begin just to be on the safe side.

Babies that are so new that their eyes are still closed should be fed twice a day. After this it goes down to once a day. Be careful as you feed them so that they do not choke. Make sure they can breathe while they are sucking the milk. You must also make sure that they do not eat too much. This can lead to intestinal issues that can result in death. After about six weeks you will need to wean the babies and get them started on pellets and vegetables.
