Chihuahua – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Chihuahua originated in Mexico. The name suggests that the exact location was the state of Chihuahua. It is considered the smallest dog breed in the world. There are two different types of Chihuahuas. One is the Apple Head breed and the other is the Deer Head breed.

The typical distinctive traits of this dog are the tiny size, the long ears that seem to flare off to the sides of the head and the aspect that sets the two types of Chihuahua apart, the head. The Apple Head has the actual shape of an apple. In addition to the head, they have a shorter muzzle and the eyes are close together. The Deer Headed type has a longer muzzle and its head resembles a tiny deer head in shape.

The Chihuahua has two different types of coats. One is longhaired with a fine and soft coat. This Chihuahua’s tail is fluffy and is generally carried over the back in an elegant fashion. The shorthaired Chihuahua is smooth to the touch and the hairs are hard. The tail is usually carried in a sickle fashion and tapers to a point.

The colours of the Chihuahua coat can vary. There are solid coloured, bi-coloured and tri-coloured coats of this breed. Although the shades are diverse from dog to dog, there are common colours such as fawn, chocolate, black and tan. Patterning can include sable, merle, spotting, brindle and masks.

The temperament of this breed can be considered snappy. They are good alarm dogs but they cannot actually protect a person effectively due to their diminutive size. The Chihuahua can be quite loving but they are easily provoked to be aggressive.
