Choosing Bird Supplies

Ideally, you will have the supplies all in place before you bring your feathered friend home. Birds are high-maintenance pets and require a lot of gear.

Cage

The round-domed antique birdcages seen in pop culture will not due for a pet bird. Avoid plastic or bamboo cages for birds with strong beaks. Rectangular or square wire cages need to be big enough to remove the bird safely and for cleaning. The door should be sliding and may need a lock or some fastening device that the bird can’t pick. Get the biggest cage you can afford. You need to get a cage that is at least one and a half times bigger than your bird’s wingspan.

Perches

Inside and outside of the cage, your pet bird will need perches. Swings can also act as perches, while giving your bird some amusement. Wooden and rope perches are preferred.

Toys

Birds are like small children in that they get bored very quickly. When they are bored, they will find things to do – whether you like those things or not. Having a variety of bird toys like chews, bells, swings or mirrors can help keep the bird from getting bored and give a good outlet for extra energy.

Feed Dishes

You’ll need at least two per cage – one for water and one for food. Make sure you can get them on and off quickly and they can be easily cleaned. It’s good to have spares in case your bird destroys one or both.
