Collie (Smooth) – Dog Breed Information and Pictures



The Smooth Collie is a sheepdog that originated in Scotland and these dogs have only been considered a completely separate breed from their Rough Collie cousins since 1994. It is often referred to as a large dog. Not only has this dog had a long history with herding livestock but it is also used for people with disabilities. The Smooth Collie has numerous skills that can be used in a variety of situations.

The coat of the Smooth Collie is made up of two layers. The undercoat is soft and dense while the outer coat has harsher hairs. The neck is where the harshest guard hairs are located. Smooth Collies have four main recognised colours: sable, blue merle and tri-coloured hairs that can be tan, black and white on the same hair. The shades can also vary from dog to dog.

The personality of the Smooth Collie is very agreeable. They are highly sociable and smart. This particular breed can be trained easily and pick up directions from their owners with ease. They have a strong desire to please their owners. The Smooth Collie is playful and gentle, especially with children.

The Smooth Collie has long been used as a herding dog but also as a guardian for property and people. They are not aggressive but will defend and protect when danger is present. This breed is highly energetic and if it is going to be kept as a house dog or family pet it will need to have a regular exercise routine in place.
