Cretan Hound – Dog Breed Information and Pictures



The Cretan Hound originated in Greece. They are a hunting dog with ancient breed roots. It is one of the oldest hunting breeds. This canine is not just a hunter. It has many skills and can accomplish a great many tasks. They excel in speed and endurance and have heightened senses.

The body of the Cretan Hound is slender and resembles both the scent hound and the sight hound. A few distinct features include cat-like paws, a strong loin that allows for significant speed and agility, and a uniquely shaped tail. The tail is long and curves upward which forms a ring.

The fur coat of the Cretan Hound consists of thick hair that is short to medium in length. It always appears neat and requires little to no grooming. Coat colours can come in an array of shades such as: cream, fawn, grey, black and pure white. Some markings and patterns can occur like brindle.

The Cretan Hound has a very unique hunting method. It uses all of its senses to get on the track of game. Not only does it smell the air but it will taste trees, rocks, and other elements in order to absorb the essence of the animal and find its location. They are generally humble, loyal and loving. They can have a deadly hunter instinct but are rarely ferocious toward humans. This breed is energetic and loves the thrill of the chase.
