Cuddling with Your Cavy

Your pet Guinea Pig is undeniably an adorable creature that you would want to cuddle up with. Before doing so, give some consideration to the feelings of your pet. Is he a social animal, or do people make him nervous, Keeping your Cavy calm and happy will go a long way towards bonding with him, but it won’t necessarily make him want to cuddle with you.

Your Guinea Pig should be as comfortable as he possibly can be to ensure the best results from your endeavours. This means a quiet, softly lit surrounding. Handle your Cavy carefully, always using both hands to fully support his body. Using treats as a bribe can help you two bond.

Children under six generally do not understand that they need to stay calm and quiet with a Guinea Pig, or may inadvertently injure the animal. If your children are old enough to handle your Cavy (under supervision) you may allow them to do so by placing him in their laps while sitting down. Never allow children to handle a Guinea Pig when taking him out of or putting him into his cage.

If your Pig is skittish, do not force him to sit with you. Wrapping him in a towel might make him more comfortable, but if he is struggling to get away put him back in his cage, or let him down. Forcing the issue can only make your Guinea Pig more nervous and unwilling to allow you to handle him in the future.
