David Tennant

Actor

David was born David McDonald on 18th April 1971 to Alexander and Helen. He has one brother and one sister. When deciding on an acting career he had to choose another surname to register with Equity as there was already a David McDonald listed, so he looked in an issue of ‘Smash Hits’ magazine and took Tennant from the Pet Shop Boys singer Neil.

David was inspired to become an actor after watching episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ as a child and he attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. His early career included many stage roles in small productions but later spent some time with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His roles on television include ‘Blackpool’ in 2004 and the title role in ‘Casanova’ in 2005. He also appeared in ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ as Barty Crouch Jr.

He was offered the role of ‘Doctor Who’ in 2005 when Christopher Eccleston left the show after just one series and he quickly became one of the public’s favourite doctors. After several series and a number of standalone episodes, he decided to quit the role.

A return to the theatre beckoned in 2007 and he went back to the RSC, appearing in their productions of ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Love’s Labours Lost’ alongside Patrick Stewart in both Stratford and London. Both productions were critically acclaimed though his run was interrupted by a back injury. David is currently dating actress Georgia Moffett, daughter of the fifth doctor Peter Davison.
