Dyspepsia in pregnancy

Indigestion has been a common condition which affects individuals on regular basis and causes different sorts of symptoms like regurgitation which would mean food coming back in the mouth, heartburn feeling, vomiting due to improper intake of food, nausea and bloating. Mainly indigestion starts with the pain in the stomach towards upper side and results in a stomach upset. The condition is a normal occurrence and has been observed that women are especially prone to it during the pregnancy period. It has been observed that the chances for indigestion to occur is more as with time the baby is taking shape in the womb. The causes would be the change in physicality of the mother and a hormonal level rise. Also more pressure on the abdomen can cause this condition. The major reason for indigestion, being acid reflux is quite common to happen during this time.

Symptoms

The symptoms are no different from the normal indigestion of any other person including pain in stomach or chest area. The symptoms have been seen to be more frequent in pregnant women and especially after the third trimester these symptoms may become much more severe.

Causes

The causes are the same as in case of normal indigestion, since the acids of the stomach get in touch with the lining of the digestive system, causing inflammation and thus the symptoms of indigestion like pain, stomach aches.

Diagnosis

The doctor should be consulted as soon as the condition of indigestion happens in a pregnant lady since its better to control it early. In case the symptoms get severe and the frequency increases, it becomes even more important to consult a doctor. The doctor should be able to diagnose the condition by asking some general questions and with examination of stomach and chest area. In few cases, they may probe the stomach or chest area to see the extent of pain and the correct causes of those.

Treatment

In most of the cases, doctor should be able to suggest some changes in the life style or diet patterns to get over the condition. Normally it has been seen that indigestion is caused by junk food consumption or over eating also. In cases where the eating pattern is fine and the symptoms are much severe, the doctor may want to probe other areas. There could be prescription of medicines to relieve indigestion and the doctor should be giving those pills that are safer to be used during pregnancy. They may refer you some of the antacids or alginates. These are the ones which start to float on the stomach content and help in keeping the stomach acid from getting in touch with the lining, in turn avoiding the inflammation or indigestion. If these do not improve the condition, he may go ahead and prescribe some acid-suppressing medicines which can help in reducing the stomach acids. In cases none of these work out, the doctor may refer you to some special treatment or if they suspect some other condition which can be causing complications.
