Fresher’s Week

When you first arrive at university it is likely that the fresher’s week will be in full swing. There will be lots of different people trying to get you to join their sports club, become part of their society, or to come along to their student nightclub.

The first week at university is known as fresher’s week. Over the years this has become the official week in which all first-year students are introduced to university life. There will be parties, there will be nightclubs, and there will be alcohol.

It is worth checking out the fresher’s fair to have a look at the stalls. You will find most of the sports teams at the university scouting for new players, local businesses offering freebies, as well as many charities and the university offering advice on student welfare.

The rest of the week will involve a lot of socialising and getting to meet new people, finding out where the best (and worst) bars are, and orientating yourself with the local area and amenities.

You will find that first year students start a week earlier than the students who are in their second and third years. This is to allow the new students to find their feet before the academic year really kicks in.

It is likely that there will be a lot of pressure to drink alcohol to excess during this first week. Remember not to overdo it, as you have the rest of the year to get through yet.
