How to Take Child’s Temperature

Taking a child’s temperature using a thermometer is not such a hard thing to do, although some find it anxiety producing. The feeling of uneasiness brought about by a thermometer could be one of the reasons why children are afraid for their temperature to be taken even by their own mothers.

Using the thermometer in taking the baby’s temperature is relatively easy and simple, thus assuring quick results. It is advisable to use a digital thermometer when taking the temperature of a child. Regular digital thermometers employ heat sensors to record body temperature, usually within 30 seconds. Such kinds of thermometer are usually used in taking the baby’s temperature through the rectum or armpit. On the other hand, tympanic thermometers are digital thermometers that are used for taking the baby’s temperature through the ear. Tympanic thermometers employ infrared rays for measuring temperature within the ear canal. They measure temperature quicker than regular digital thermometers. A digital pacifier thermometer is also a kind of thermometer usually preferred by the children.

Taking temperature through their armpits is usually preferred more by the children than placing the thermometer in their mouth. This is because children may feel a bit uncomfortable about the latter. Taking the child’s temperature through the armpit also offers an accurate result since child’s skin in that area is more sensitive.

If children are not cooperative in taking their temperature, one may try to divert their attention through using other activities. This can be done through a puppet “talking” with them or reading a children’s tale for them.
