How to write (sell) a novel

Are you curious to know how to write or sell your novel effectively, Here are some easy guides and tips to remember.

1. Realise that publishing is considered the harshest business in the world. More than 99% of novels are not published legitimately. “Legitimately” means that a publisher pays the writer in advance and perhaps prints a factual print run. Of the small number of novels that are legitimately published, a substantial majority of these will sell only a few copies, and then go out of print. Only a small percentage of novels actually end up being proudly exhibited on the shelves of some local bookshop. Of these, a lucky few will become bestsellers.

2. Accept the first step and decide if you still want to continue writing.

3. Find a story you are interested in, the characters and roles you believe in, and the type of book you want to share with people.

4. Study and read more tips for good writing.

5. When you are finished writing your novel, revise it. Rearrange and improve the writing, rethink characters, reorder scenes, cut out repetitive scenes, write new ones, and rephrase where necessary.

6. Submit and present your novel. Some writers go directly to the publishers and some submit it to literary agents. Whatever route you choose, expect that your first submission will be disapproved and rejected. It’s normal for a first-time writer to be rejected. Even bestselling authors, such as John Grisham and Stephen King, have received rejections. For most writers, having their books published can take years to accomplish.

7. While working and waiting for the seventh step (negotiating with a potential publisher), try to start writing your second book.
