Laekenois – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Laekenois is a type of Belgian Shepherd Dog that originates in Belgium. They are not their own specific breed but, rather, part of a breed that encompasses four different types of canines. This particular dog is considered to be the rarest of this breed. They are also the oldest among the four kinds of dogs.

The Laekenois is a medium-size dog. Its body structure is muscular and strong. This illustrates that it has a hard-working persona behind the physique. They are very intelligent and desire duties to keep them satisfied. This working canine is happiest when it feels its worth. They do not require grooming as often as the other dogs in the breed. In fact, this dog is low maintenance where grooming is concerned.

The Laekenois is the rougher looking Belgian Shepherd Dog. There are a variety of colours that the Laekenois may display, but they are usually greyish or sable in nature. The hair is rough and coarse but generally appears messy. The coat has distinct hairs that are bi-coloured. This means that the tip of the hair can be a darker colour whilst the shaft is a lighter shade.

Laekenois are not meant for city life or apartment dwelling. They need plenty of space to run and play as they are an energetic dog. They are loyal and courageous. This is not an aggressive dog, but it can respond in a defensive manner when it is provoked. This is a trait that most sheep dogs share as they not only herd their flock, but they also protect it.
