REASONS OF MOUTH ULCER
Mouth ulcer does not pass by sharing cutlery or drinking glasses or by kissing. Damage caused to the mouth from a sharp tooth or by incorrect use of tooth brush or while getting a filling or damage caused by biting the inside of your cheek accidentally while eating are the most likely causes of minor ulcer.
Reasons for recurrent mouth ulcers is not known but there are a number of factors adding to the chances of recurrent ulcers which include Stress, Anxiety, excessive brushing of teeth or chewing hard or sharp food or even due to hormonal changes occurring in the body, like hormonal changes during menstrual cycle of woman. There are also certain type of foods which increase the risk of mouth ulcers and include coffee, chocolate, almonds, peanuts, tomatoes and cheese, wheat flour and strawberries.
Sometimes when a person quits smoking, it may aggravate ulcers but will be only a temporary phase which will pass away.
Family history accounts for 40% cases of recurrent mouth ulcers and there is a probability of 90% of recurrent mouth ulcers to the person whose both the parents have suffered from recurrent mouth ulcer.
Other Medical Conditions that cause recurrent mouth ulcer are
Deficiency of Vitamin B12 :- Vitamin B12 helps in the formation of red blood cells and ensures healthy nervous system of the body. Deficiency of Vitamin B12 causes mouth ulcer, shortness of breath and general feeling of tiredness
Deficiency of Iron: – Iron helps red blood cells to carry oxygen and iron deficiency causes dizziness, lethargy and tiredness. This also to a certain extent is responsible for mouth ulcer.
Coeliac disease:-It is a disease caused due to the intolerance of gluten a protein found in barley, rye and wheat causing inflammation of the small intestine and the common symptom developed in this disease is mouth ulcer.
Crohn’s disease:-This causes inflammation of the gut resulting in ulcer in both the mouth and the stomach.
Immunodeficiency: – any disease which suppresses or attacks the body’s immune system (system which protects the body against illness and infection) causes mouth ulcer. An example of immunosuppressant illness is HIV
Medication:- Reaction of the body to certain types of medicines can also cause mouth ulcer which happens either at the start of the medication or increase in the dosage and include the following medicines
NSAIDs (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which are pain killing medicines and include aspirin and ibuprofen.
NICORANDIL which is a medicine for treating angina, a condition of chest pain caused by reduction in the flow of blood to the heart.
Beta Blocker a medicine related to the treatment of various problems related to the heart and flow of blood like high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythm or angina. The effects are however temporary and if the affect increases, it is advisable to speak to the doctor who may prescribe an alternative medication but one should not stop medication on their own.
