Packing your wedding dress for travel

It does not matter whether your wedding ceremony is local or the other side of the world, travelling with a wedding dress is not easy. A lot of thinking and careful planning has to be applied to ensure your bridal gown reaches its destination in one piece and undamaged.
When you purchase your bridal gown it will probably come with a garment bag which is a cover for the gown. The bridal gown should be stored in this bag according to care instructions until you are ready to wear it. Storing your gown correctly will reduce the risk of any damage to the dress. It should not be stored in any place where there is moisture such as the garage or loft.
Packing your wedding dress correctly before travelling will reduce the amount of wrinkles significantly. Before packing your gown find an appropriate box that the gown will fit in. If possible an air tight waterproof container is ideal as this prevents any spills or odours been absorbed on to the gown.
If you are flying there may be no option to hang your dress whilst travelling. If this is the case then once packed in an airtight container, clearly label the box and check it in as part of your luggage. Ensure your name and address is clearly visible and the lid is taped up to prevent any damage to the dress.
If you are travelling by car it may be possible to hang the dress, if this option is not available it can be packed in a garment bag and laid flat across the top of other luggage. Otherwise pack in airtight container.
