Pyrenean Mastiff – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Pyrenean Mastiff is so-called because the breed originated from Aragon Pyrenees region of Spain. Pyrenean Mastiffs are large dogs that are well known for their friendly demeanour. They have a large frame and a thick, wide head. They grow to an average height of between 71 and 77 centimetres, with the female Pyrenean Mastiffs tending to be several centimetres shorter and a few pounds lighter than the males. While this size range is the average, Pyrenean Mastiffs have been known to grow considerably larger.

Because they are so loyal to their family, the Pyrenean Mastiff makes a very good guard dog. They are protective not just of the people that they love, but of their home as well. Pyrenean Mastiffs have been used for protection in Spain for decades. Now that the popularity of the breed has increased, Pyrenean Mastiffs can also be found as family pets and guard dogs in other parts of Europe and in North America. Since they are so large and muscular, Pyrenean Mastiffs need a lot of space and a fair amount of exercise every day. They shouldn’t be kept in apartments as they are too confined and Pyrenean Mastiffs need more room.

Pyrenean Mastiffs typically have a white or cream coat with large dark spots on the back and sides. They also have a dark band of colour on their heads. Their coat is dense and thick, which helps to keep them warm.
