Rabbit Grooming

Rabbits are animals that require very specific care. When it comes to grooming your rabbit, there are a few important things that every pet owner needs to know. Rabbits shed their coat every three months. This alternates between very light shedding and very heavy shedding. During the heavy shed you should try to brush the loose fur out as often as possible. Rabbits lick just like cats do and this can make them very ill if they develop a hairball in their stomach. They do not vomit like cats and this can block up their system and actually result in death.

You might notice some bald spots on your rabbit during their shedding period. Some rabbits end up very bald which can cause alarm to pet owners. Don’t worry about it though. It should grow back to normal within a few weeks. Long-haired rabbit owners may find that they prefer to trim their rabbit’s fur. You can have the vet assist you with this if you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable.

Most rabbits really do not enjoy taking a bath. They do not need one the way dogs do so it’s best not to give your rabbit a bath unless necessary. It can cause them to become very stressed out. Never give your rabbit a bath if they are sick. It can make them much more ill. Keep an eye out for things like long toenails or fleas. These things have to be addressed before they get out of control. Groom your rabbit to encourage his health.
