‘Rachel Getting Married’ Brings Out the Dirty Secrets

So you thought weddings were fun and happy and all things gooey and mushy, Think again or at least let ‘Rachel Getting Married’ make you think again.

Directed by Jonathan Demme, this movie is an emotionally charged, darkly dramatic and funny story of a wedding and the goings-on within the family involved. Rosemarie DeWitt plays Rachel, Bill Irwin her father, and Debra Winger her mother. But the movie belongs to Kym, played by Anne Hathaway.

Just to digress for bit – Anne Hathaway’s been nominated for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards for her role in this movie so a big whoop whoop for her!

So, Kym checks out of rehab to attend her sister’s wedding. It’s more than obvious the family is uncomfortable having the “screw-up” around but Kym hits back with her incessant wisecracking. And amazingly enough, I realised even though Kym is a screw-up, is completely self-obsessed, and entirely unsympathetic about anyone else – you still end up liking her most of all. That’s a pretty brilliant screenplay, good direction and great acting all rolled into one.

The film uses a handheld camera to add the “real” touch to the wedding scenario I’m assuming and I liked that. It’s not just a movie about a wedding; it’s a story about a family and its secrets. It’s intense and Anne Hathaway’s acting is exceptional in this movie because her bruises show through her eyes and her expressions. You can almost imagine her swigging a few gulps of vodka to get through the madness.

My only gripe: the movie needed a little more of a sense of humour.
