“Rumor Has It”

This is one of those movies that could have been really good but was totally botched in the execution. There is no sense of “what next” with this film. All you have to do is watch the trailer and you pretty much know about 80% of the plot line.

This is a Rob Reiner film billed as romantic comedy. In it, a woman named Sarah travels to California to attend her sister’s wedding. While there, she meets up with her grandmother who reveals many family secrets. The grandmother seems to be the typical gossiping busybody, and I developed an instant dislike of her which probably coloured my opinion of the film.

As the film progresses, we see dear grandmom reveal to Sarah that her own mother cheated on her father mere .days before their wedding day. Sarah then goes on to try to learn more about her parents, fuelled by the few tidbits dear grandmother has shared with her.

As I said, I found the plot of this film to be quite juvenile and not very engaging. I also wasn’t that impressed with much of the acting, including the lack of chemistry between some of the main characters. Some of the characters are also not very likeable, such as the grandmother and a local family Sarah discovers while in California, who supposedly served as the real-life inspiration for the clan featured in the classic film “The Graduate.”

I would take a pass on this film, if I were you. I found it to be an utter waste of time.
