Scottish Terrier – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

While the official name of this dog breed is the Scottish Terrier, and it is sometimes called the Aberdeen Terrier, it is most popularly known as the Scottie. As their name clearly indicates, Scotland is the breed’s country of origin. While these are very small dogs, they have the bravery of some larger breeds. In fact, in the nineteenth century, George, the Earl of Dumbarton, dubbed them ‘Diehards’ because his pack of Scottish Terriers was so brave. While little is known about the true origins of the Scottish Terrier or how long they have been around, they were first mentioned in documents from the 1500s.

Scottish Terriers have short legs and a small, compact frame. They are very muscular and strong. Scottish Terriers average a weight between eight and ten kilograms and a height of around 25 centimetres. While male and female Scottish Terriers tend to have the same height, females will weigh a bit less than the males.

Scottish Terriers are most known for their coats. They have long fur that hangs down from their body, belly, legs, tail and face. Some Scottish Terrier owners will cut the coat short, although they may leave the fur long on the legs and face in order to keep the popular look of the breed. Scottish Terriers have a dark coat that doesn’t get much lighter than dark grey. They can be black, grey or brindle. While rare, Scottish Terriers can even have a wheaten coat of nearly white coloured fur.
