Spanish Water Dog – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

Known in Spanish as Perro de Agua Español, the Spanish Water Dog originates from Spain. While there is little proof to the true historical origin of the Spanish Water Dog breed, there are accounts of similar looking sheepdogs living in the same area as early as 1,100 AD. While it can not be verified whether these accounts were specifically talking about the Spanish Water Dog, signs point to that as being the case.

Over hundreds of years, the Spanish Water Dog was used as a sheep herding dog. Not only would they traffic the sheep across long distances, keeping them in order, bit they also made a good guard dog. They were protective of their sheep and would keep them out of harm’s way whether from strange humans or predatory animals. Some Spanish Water Dog owners would even use them as a gundog to help out during the hunt. This is rare, however. If not used specifically for working, Spanish Water Dogs also make good companions. They are affectionate and will show their love for their family. They are wary of strangers and may need a bit of encouragement to get close to someone new.

Spanish Water Dogs have a very distinct coat. Their fur is long, curly, and thick. This breed’s coat often takes the form of cords, which looks similarly to human dreadlocks. Spanish Water Dogs can come in a wide variety of colours, including brown, beige, black, white and bicolour.
