Stabyhoun – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Stabyhoun dog breed is sometimes known as the Beike, the Frisian Pointing Dog, and the Stabij. It is also often nicknamed as the Staby and it originated from the northern portion of the Netherlands. Stabyhoun dogs have been around since at least the nineteenth century. During that time, they were primarily used for hunting. They fought small and medium-size prey, including moles, birds, and foxes. The hunting Stabyhoun helps in two ways. First, it will point to the hunter’s prey once the dog senses its presence. This way, it will show the hunter where to shoot, helping the hunt. Second, once the hunter has shot the prey, the dog will then retrieve the felled animal without damaging the skin, fur, or feathers. In these ways, Stabyhouns make fine gun dogs.

Stabyhoun dogs are medium-size in build. They average a height between 50 and 53 centimetres where females are slightly shorter. They also average a weight between 45 and 55 kilograms. Again, female Stabyhoun dogs are a bit smaller. A black and white coat is most common although they can also be brown or orange with only small white markings.

Unfortunately, the Stabyhoun dog breed is currently endangered. There are only about 3,500 registered dogs in the entire world. Breeders are actively trying to stop the dog breed from going extinct although this is a tough process. Dog breeds have been saved with far less living dogs than this left to work with, so they should be fine in terms of keeping the breed in existence along as they exercise proper control over the breeding process.
