Star Trek

This latest (and supposedly last Star Trek film) is interesting in that it follows the original crew of the Star Ship Enterprise through the time before they served together. It is basically a prequel to the hit television series that, sadly, only lasted for a few seasons.

This sci-fi saga basically takes a chug from the proverbial fountain of youth in that we see all our Star Trek favourites as they were even before the advent of the television series. The film shows how Kirk met Spock, long before Kirk stepped into his first command onboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. We get interesting insights into the personalities that made up the original television crew and are privy to various interactions between them, many of which occurred while they were still students at the Starfleet Academy. Of course, the actors portraying our television favourites are different, younger versions of the originals, but with one exception. Leonard Nimoy appears in this movie, which will likely be his last affiliation with the Star Trek genre.

I particularly enjoyed this movie for the nostalgia. I remember being glued to the television set as a youngster watching the Star Trek television series. I remember following my favourite characters to various Star Trek conventions and then anxiously awaiting the release of the Star Trek movies. Even when the series evolved into Star Trek, the Next Generation, I still longed for the original. This film let me have that original back, even though only for a short period of time.
