Staying Safe At Work

When you have managed to get your first part time job you will naturally be excited. However, it is important that as well as covering the legal requirements such as work permits you also consider your own safety when doing the job.

A classical example is the paper round. By all means take a paper round, but make sure you take common sense steps to stay safe. You are likely to be out early in the morning when it is quieter, so make sure your parents know your route and how long it takes you to complete. Carry a mobile phone and know how to use it. In the darker winter mornings make sure you have a visibility stripe on your coat, or wear a reflective band to make sure you can been seen. If you ride your push bike, make sure it has lights and is in good working order.

Those working in shops need to make sure that they have an adult around at all times who will step in and deal with a customer who isn’t being friendly. Be confident in yourself and calmly tell any customers that are being rude or aggressive that you are going to get your manager. Alternatively you could make sure there is a bell you can ring and the adult will come immediately to help you if it is not practical for them to be right there next to you the whole time.
