The best anti-wrinkle cream for your decade

Nobody wants wrinkles on their skin, but they are a fact of life. However, the good news is that we can all take steps to give our skin the best chance of looking and feeling youthful for as long as possible, as well as taking care of it as we get older to reduce the effects of age, the environment and lifestyle. There is diet, exercise, and, of course anti-wrinkle cream and treatments such as Botox and fillers. In this article we will explain some of the factors that cause wrinkles, the steps that can be taken in daily life to help improve the skin, and also the kinds of ingredients that help during different decades, to help make it easier to decide which is the best anti-wrinkle cream for your age.

Before we decide which anti-ageing skin care treatment to use, let’s look at some of the factors that cause wrinkles. One of the first signs of ageing is the development of crows feet around the eyes –  because the skin in this area is thin and weak it is susceptible to premature ageing. Lines around the mouth such as smile lines and vertical lip lines are mostly caused by regular lip movements but made worse by smoking.

So, what steps can we take, what are the ingredients in the best anti-ageing products, and when should we start them to minimize the effects? In our twenties we should start using products with antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, which help minimize damage to cells by free radicals.  Green tea is also useful as it helps reduce inflammation on the skin caused by pollution.

During our thirties cell renewal slows down, so introduce more ingredients that exfoliate and encourage it to self-renew easily. AHA’s such as Glycolic and Lactic acids are helpful, as well as enzymes, and its recommended that at least one product that exfoliates is in everyone’s morning and evening skin care routine. Once we reach our forties, we need to really start looking after our skin to lay the foundations for the next few decades. The appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and uneven texture are more common at this age, so any wrinkle treatments should help improve the density of skin, so serums and concentrates that contain peptides and ingredients such as copper are useful as they encourage the production of more collagen to smoothing and plump. Retinol is also an ingredient to look for as it kick-starts collagen production and helps soften the skin’s surface, improving the appearance of wrinkles and the effects of sun damage.

From the 50’s onwards our hormones begin to change and there is a drop in ostrogen which means a lowering in the skin’s natural moisturizing agents, so ingredients that provide deep hydration as well as strengthen the lipid barrier are great for ensuring moisture doesn’t escape. Also, natural oils such as primrose and rosehip help nourish the skin, and ceramides hep regenerate the surface.

So, we have to accept that our skin ages and it will change, but by thinking about our regime and what we use from a young age, we can give our skin a head start and the best wrinkle creams are the ones we use that have ingredients appropriate to our age.
