The Flower Girl—A Smile in the Making

What little girl wouldn’t want to get dressed up in a beautiful dress and be the centre of attention as she walks down the aisle scattering rose petals for the bride to walk upon, If you have more than one little girl in the family, you may be hard pressed to make a choice. Not a problem as it is perfectly acceptable to have more than one. This is the diplomatic way to avoid choosing one family’s favourite niece or friend over another.

Flower girls are usually dressed similarly to the bridesmaids or maid of honour. The best age is between four and eight. Any younger and they may get confused or scared at the last moment. Older girls may be more interested in being a junior bridesmaid instead. It all depends on the attention span and/or the personality of the individual.

With kids, it is always best to expect the unexpected. Your flower girl may get a case of nerves at the last minute and make a mistake. Just go with the flow as most people just smile and consider it part of the ceremony. If you want to make your flower girl more comfortable, seat her parents on the aisle. Chances are that she will feel more relaxed with their familiar faces in view. A small gift, such as a necklace, that she can wear on that special day also works wonders.

Sometimes, flower girls are paired up with boys the same age that act as ring bearers. Since they are expected to walk in together, it is a great idea that they get to know each other. They can form sort of a buddy support system. Of course, they may already know each other. Either way, kind words and smiles go a long way.
