We are all aware that there are hundreds of films released every week, some of which make tons of money. Many of them do really well at the box office, but did you realise just how many films can be great hit films and yet they never reach the coveted number one position, Check out this list, you might be surprised by some of the titles.

10. Chicago
This Oscar nominated and award winning film never got higher than number two on the box office charts, yet it raked in a lot of dough and has become a favourite among all those in the theatre world.

9. A Beautiful Mind
Russell Crowe’s heartbreaking performance never made the number one spot, even though it received more critical acclaim than most films ever do and was nominated for a ton of awards.

8. Beauty and the Beast
Disney’s classic tale may have warmed the hearts of millions, but apparently not enough to reach the top of the charts. But don’t fret, it still made lots of money at the box office and especially from DVD/VHS sales.

7. The Polar Express
It’s Tom Hanks, how could you not see this movie, Even animated he’s still a lot of fun to watch and the story was one that was made for a family audience so everyone could enjoy it.

A classic musical film, which was a favourite with generations of film lovers. How unbelievable is it that this one never made it to the number one spot. This was the ultimate teen film of its time.

5. Dances With Wolves
This one only made it to the number two box office spot, because it was so darn long. Kevin Costner has a thing for epic movies, but to get the box office appeal he needs to cut down the running time.

4. The Day After Tomorrow
A great movie, with wonderful special effects. It must have had some stiff competition, because this is exactly the sort of movie that typically would have garnered the number one position.

3. The Polar Express (IMAX)
Apparently no one wanted to see the IMAX version, because this movie never made it higher than number eleven on the charts. Yet over time it has brought in a ton of cash.

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks
No surprise here. There was a lot of top quality opposition around when this was released and while it is one that all the kids want to see, there were other kids movies released at the same time.

1. My Big Fat Greek Wedding
This small budget film made it big, but it took a while to get there. For weeks and weeks it slowly climbed the charts, but it could never quite make it all the way to the number one slot.
